Two Amazing Events
The first chapter describes two amazing events. One event might be called
‘supernatural’. The other event is miraculous.
John the Baptist
- Why is the birth of John called supernatural?
John's parents were very old - beyond the age of having children.
- Who were the mother and father of John?
Zechariah was the father; Elizabeth was the mother.
- What was the occupation of Zechariah?
He was a priest.
- What news did the angel give to Zechariah?
The news that he and Elizabeth were going to have a son.
- Why was Zechariah struck dumb - and could not speak?
He did not believe the Angel’s message.
The Annunciation
- Where was Mary living at the time of ‘the Annunciation’?
Mary was living in Nazareth in the region of Galilee.
- Is possible to consider the Annunciation - the message of the Angel to Mary as
being miraculous in some way?
The child to be born was through the work of the Holy Spirit.
- What was the significance of the Holy Spirit of God being responsible for Mary
having a child?
The child would be the Son of God.
- What name did the angel say the child should be given?
Gabriel said the child would be given the name ‘Jesus’, and he would be called the son of
the Most High.
