The Parable of the Good Shepherd
There are 40 parables in the first three gospels, but no parables in the
Gospel of John. John’s Gospel is rich in allegories. Perhaps the most
important allegory to understand is about the good shepherd.
- Why was the story of the good shepherd so important in those times?
The people of that day understood the occupation of a shepherd. They could
readily understand what Jesus was talking about.
- Is the relationship between a shepherd and the sheep relevant?
Sheep are very innocent and vulnerable. Without a watchful shepherd, sheep are
in danger.
- What are the characteristics of a good shepherd?
A good shepherd protects the sheep from danger. The shepherd also takes care of
the sheep so they are not exposed to sickness and disease.
- Who is the good shepherd in the allegory? Who are the sheep?
Jesus is the good shepherd. His followers are the sheep.
- What is the most important truth that Jesus explained in this allegory?
Jesus referred to himself as the gate or the door. The only way to enter the
kingdom of God was through the date - through Jesus Christ.
Raising Lazarus from the Dead
- The village of Bethany - the home of Lazarus, is near Jerusalem on the
slopes of the Mount of Olives. Why were the disciples concerned when
Jesus received news about Lazarus being sick?
Bethany was in an areas where there were people seeking to kill Jesus. The
disciples thought it was dangerous to go there.
- Why did Jesus delay going to Bethany to heal Lazarus?
Jesus knew that Lazarus would die and that he would raise Lazarus from the dead
- that this would be an encouragement to the disciples.
- What statement did Jesus make to Martha that is the most important thing
that Jesus said about eternal life?
Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me shall live,
even if he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in me shall never
die.
