Chapter 2 |
Two Remarkable Births
John the Baptist and Jesus Christ are dramatically linked together in life and in
history. Again - we encounter the supernatural and the miraculous.
The Birth John the Baptist
- What did the relatives of Zechariah and Elizabeth want to name the child?
The relatives wanted to name the child after the father - Zechariah.
- What was the response of the parents?
Zechariah and Elizabeth insisted that the child be named ‘John’.
- According to the prophecy of Zechariah, what was the special mission of John?
John’s mission was to prepare the way for the Messiah.
The Birth of Jesus Christ
- Who were the first people to hear the announcement by the angels about the
birth of Jesus the Christ?
The first to hear the announcement were shepherds looking after their flocks of sheep and
other animals.
-
The angel spoke to the shepherds. What did the angel say about Jesus?
The angel told the shepherds the news was great and joyful; a Savior has been born -
Christ the Lord. The shepherd were given a sign.
- What was the sign that was given? What happened?
The shepherds were told they would find a baby, wrapped in a blanket; and lying in a
manger. The Shepherds went to Bethlehem and found the child - just as the angel
had said.
Truth to Remember - What Believers Affirm
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God
from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the
Father.
Through him all things were made. For us mankind and for our salvation he came down from
heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and was made
man.
The above statement is from the Nicene Creed.
