Chapter 25 |
Jesus and Pilate
- Who was Pilate?
Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea.
- Why did the religious leaders bring Jesus before Pilate?
The leaders wanted Jesus put to death. The Sanhedrin could put Jesus to death if
they could prove he committed an offense against the Law of Moses.
Pilate did have the authority to put Jesus to death.
Jesus of Barabbas
- Who was Barabbas?
He was a rebel who had been convicted and sentenced to death.
- What part did Barabbas have in the death of Jesus.
Pilate attempted to set Jesus free. The people demanded that Barabbas be released
instead of Jesus. Pilate agreed.
Jesus Condemned to Death
- Pilate thought Jesus was innocent of any crime. So then, why did Pilate
sentence Jesus to death?
Pilate was fearful that the people would revolt if he did not grant the people their
demand to kill Jesus.
- What special orders did Pilate give concerning the charges against Jesus?
Pilate gave instructions for a sign to be placed on the cross that said Jesus of
Nazareth was King of the Jews.
Pilate Washes His Hands
- After Jesus was sentenced to death, why did Pilate washed his hands?
Pilate did this to attest to the innocence of Jesus - that the religious leaders were
responsible for Jesus being condemned to die.
- How did the people respond?
They cried out that the blood of Jesus be against them and their children.
