Jesus and the Law of God
  • The religious leaders built a hedge around the law. What does this mean?
    There were smaller or lesser laws that were intended to protect the Law itself. The people would break these lesser laws before getting near to the real Law.

  • Why did Jesus object to this approach?
    Jesus showed them that to fulfill the Law, you needed to go inside the Law and understand the purpose of the Law.

  • Why were the religious leaders so upset when Jesus healed the man with the withered hand?
    The religious leaders believed that healing on the Sabbath was form of work. To them, to heal on the Sabbath was to break the Law.
Jesus Calls the Twelve Disciples
  • What did Jesus do before he selected the disciples?
    Jesus prayed all night.

  • What did Jesus call the disciples? What does the ‘word’ he called the disciples mean?
    Jesus called the men apostles. The word means to be ‘sent’.
The Sermon on the Mount
  • This sermon begins by Jesus telling people what it is to be blessed. What are these blessings called?
    The part of the sermons that contains the blessings is called ‘The Beatitudes.

  • What did Jesus say was the true test of loving others?
    Jesus said that we should love our enemies.

  • How did the Lord describe a true disciple?
    Jesus said that a true disciple was like a man who built his house on a rock.
The Healing of the Centurion’s Servant
  • Why was this particular healing different and important?
    The centurion was not a Jew. This healing demonstrated that Jesus had love and compassion for all people - Jews and Gentiles.
